How to Manage Remote Teams When Nearshoring
Working remotely is becoming increasingly common in today’s workplace climate. 70 percent of the global workforce works remotely once a week. In 2016, the number of Americans working remotely was 43 percent.
Nearshoring involves working with teams based in other locations. Managing them can be difficult because of the lack of proximity. But it doesn’t have to be.
Here are some things you should do to effectively manage your remote teams.
Possibly, the most important thing you need to do as project manager is to maintain a steady line of communication with your remote teams. You can’t simply walk over to an employee’s desk to inquire about the status of a project task when working with remote teams.
Maintain communication through conference calls, instant messaging, and simple phone calls. You’ll remain up-to-date with the latest on the project and receive valuable feedback in order to make improvements to the project.
Set Clear Timelines
As project manager, you should make your expectations clear from the start. Your team members should know how much time they’re expected to take when completing a certain task. Provide them with recommendations for estimated work hours and set deadlines.
It’s never advisable to assign any one team member with a dozen or so projects at a time. Instead, limit the number to about two or three at maximum to avoid the very real possibility of employee burnout.
Promote Project Visibility
Working with remote teams can quickly become disorganized. The lack of proximity can affect project visibility. As project manager, you need to ensure that project visibility is maintained throughout the period of development.
In order to achieve this, you can utilize project management software that’s easy to access and provides a central location for the project. The complete team should be able to access it whenever it needs to. Have your team provide regular updates on this shared space. This will improve communication and collaboration. Whenever any information or documents need to be shared, they’ll be visible to all your teams in their various locations.
